[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. < ἀνά (με αποκοπή και αφομοίωση) + πίνω. Ο τ. ἀνάπωτις απαντά μόνο στον Πίνδαρο για μερικούς λόγους στον Σκύμνο τον γεωγράφο και σε μτγν. συγγραφείς. Στον Ηρόδ. σημαίνει την «επιστροφή τής θάλασσας» σε αντίθεση με τις λ. πλημμυρίς ή ῥωχία. Η διατήρηση τού –τ- (αντί τού ιωνικού –σις) κάνει πιστευτή την υπόθεση ότι ο Ηρόδ. υιοθέτησε λ. δωρικής προελέυσεως σχετιζόμενη με τη θάλασσα [ἄμπωτις (θάλασσα)
πρβλ. λατ. resorlsens unda] και ότι η λ. πιθ. να είναι τ. θηλυκού ουσιαστικού που δηλώνει τον δράστη τής ενέργειας τού ρ. ἀναπίνω (η ἀνάπωτις > ἄμπωτις-ο ἀναπώτης) ή και την ίδια την ενέργεια τού ρ. Εν τούτοις και για τις δύο εκδοχές πρέπει να παρατηρηθεί ότι το ουσιαστικό που δηλώνει τον δράστη τής ενέργειας και που αναλογεί στο ρ. πίνω είναι συνηθέστερα το πότης και όχι το πώτης.
